What Is An Optical Zoom Camcorder?

What is an Optical Zoom Camcorder?

An optical zoom camcorder uses optical zoom in place of digital zoom. Some cameras may have both a digital and an optical zoom, which will be used as a major selling point. Optical zoom is the actual zoom, so most people will want to look for a model with a high optical zoom, as this will provide higher quality zooms in the video. Generally speaking though, the higher the optical zoom, the more expensive the camera will be. If you need a high optical zoom on a tight budget, don’t just buy the cheapest thing you can find.

The Benefits of Optical Zoom

Optical zoom uses magnification of the light entering the camera lens to provide the illusion that the subject is closer to the camera than it actually is. This magnification takes place before the picture is taken, which produces a higher quality result than digital zoom, which simply magnifies the pixels in a photo after it is taken. Without zoom, it can be rather difficult to take good pictures and video with any camera, no matter the quality of the other features a camera provides. Optical zoom is easy to use because it is built into the camera. It doesn’t require additional lenses or equipment, and at the push of a button can be used when time is of the essence to get the best shot possible. The optical zoom is a wonderful way to eliminate background junk you don’t want to be seen in the video or a photo, without having to edit it before it gets seen by others.

Great Little Camera

Review Date: October 25, 2008

This is a great little camera. Took a video, connected to my laptop, which looked at the camcorder as a USB storage device, opened it in a new window and just copied the MP4 to my desktop. I can play it as an MP4 from my desktop, but I opened Adobe Premier Elements and changed it to a Quicktime video (conversion took about a minute) which I can email to friends. I had no problem with video lag and I am wondering if the other reviewer may have inadvertantly put the camera in its time-lapse mode. I would say that the video is comparable to my Sony Handycam (for which I spent considerably more).
GREAT LITTLE CAMCORDER

I just received my camcorder today and I already love it! I don't understand all the complaints others are having. I had no trouble importing my videos in 16:9 mode using the Cyberlink software that's included. I've already burned my first DVD and it looks GREAT on my 56" Samsung TV. The cam feels good in your hand and the buttons are all in easy reach. The zoom is awesome! Yes there is a little shake at full 34x zoom, but that's to be expected. I also own a Flip Ultra and for a few more bucks, this cam blows it away! I can't wait to try the interval recording mode (try to find that on another cam in this price range). I got the blue one and it is very nice looking. The cam has a good quality feel to it. Get one for yourself. You won't regret it.
AMAZING!

I have used many camcorders in the past. My most recent camcorder is a JVC mini camcorder. It is a wonderful little device which does everything well. Enter the Samsung MX20. This memory camcorder blows every other device I've ever used out of the water! First of all, it fits in the palm of my hand perfectly. It's small (petite), but loaded! The 34X zoom is so quick and precise, I quickly forgot about my little JVC device. It hardly ever needs time to auto adjust the viewfinder.

I recently used the MX20 at my daughter's pageant. From 20 - 30 feet away, I was able to zoom (distortion free) in on the contestants as if I was sitting on the front row. I was also sitting in a very dark section of the audience and through one of its many camera selections (night viewing), I was able to record perfectly. I was using an 8gb sd card and got about 1.25 hours of high quality recording. Not bad. Also, there is no large battery hanging off the back of the device!

Overall, I would have so say that these new flash memory recorders have made the last generation of recorders obsolete. Plain and simple.
Perfect for what I need.

I just wanted a little camcorder with decent quality. For the money you can't go wrong with the SC-MX20. It is so simple and straight forward. The only thing I don't like is that none of the common/standard media players can play mp4 format. Other than that I like it and am very happy with the quality of the video. I would recomend it. I did a lot of research on camcorders the ones with good reviews are $350 +. I decided to take a chance on this camcorder because it is so new there aren't many reviews yet and I am very happy with my choice.
great camera !! :)

Reviewer: Gift Card Reciipient,
great camera, good quality, cheap price 34x zoom is a LOT and the picture displays well you can record up to 5 hrs if video with just an 8gb card the battery can last up to 3 hrs, or longer if you turn off the display
it works fine with macs, and iMovie HD and 08 the only downside is the fact that you cannot record directly onto iMovie, that requires a firewire camera
